Jennings O’Donovan is providing comprehensive consulting engineering services to Irish Water for the development of essential wastewater collection and treatment infrastructure across eight key towns and villages in County Donegal. The scope encompasses major hubs including Buncrana and Ballybofey-Stranorlar, alongside several smaller coastal and rural settlements. The project focuses on modernizing existing systems to meet stringent receiving water discharge requirements while accounting for both current demands and future population growth.

The wastewater treatment plant (WwTP) element of the project involved rigorous design reports featuring detailed population assessments and receiving water evaluations. A core methodology of the engineering approach was process optimization, aimed at achieving maximum output from existing treatment units to ensure cost-effective upgrades. This ensures that the infrastructure improvements provide high-value environmental protection for Donegal’s diverse water bodies.

On the network side, the project includes extensive surveys, hydraulic modelling, and assessments of existing sewer systems. Jennings O’Donovan is overseeing solutions for rehabilitation, network extensions, and the upgrading of pumping stations, alongside ensuring Storm Water Overflow (SWO) compliance. Following the completion of preliminary reports, the project has progressed through environmental reporting—including Appropriate Assessments and Invasive Species Surveys—and the management of site investigations and topographical surveys to facilitate the planning application process.
