Project Details

The Killybegs and Lettermacaward Regional Water Supply Schemes Project is a critical infrastructure initiative designed to provide a sustainable supply of wholesome drinking water to West Donegal. The project ensures full compliance with European Communities Drinking Water Regulations (ECDWR) for consumers across Killybegs, Lettermacaward, Glenties, Portnoo, and Fintown. By modernizing these systems, the project successfully removes these schemes from the EPA Remedial Action List while meeting long-term service obligations regarding water quality and availability.

The scope of works involved extensive upgrades to two existing Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) and the enhancement of raw water impoundment facilities. At the Killybegs WTP, capacity was significantly increased from 4,500m³/day to 11,850m³/day. Similarly, the Lettermacaward WTP saw a capacity expansion from 1,350m³/day to 2,800m³/day. These upgrades included complex Design-Build elements and operational service management during the construction phases to ensure uninterrupted supply.

Technical infrastructure improvements extended to the construction of a new concrete gravity dam at Derkmore Lough and an extensive overhaul of the distribution network. This included the installation of approximately 26,000 meters of water distribution pipelines, multiple booster pumping stations (at locations including Curraghfeaghan, Naran/Portnoo, and Drumlaghrid), and the construction of reinforced concrete storage reservoirs at Meeneakillew (1,200m³) and Derryloughan (1,500m³). These network linkages provide essential connectivity between regional supply areas, ensuring hydraulic stability and redundancy.
