Project Details

Jennings O’Donovan has been leading the Rathmullan, Milford, and Ramelton Wastewater Scheme as Employer’s Representative since 2012. This essential project delivers a centralized Wastewater Treatment Plant (WwTP) to serve three distinct agglomerations in County Donegal. By upgrading the wastewater network and providing modern treatment facilities, the scheme eliminates non-compliant overflows and significantly reduces the risk of sewer flooding in the region.

The project infrastructure includes a new 5,500 PE treatment plant and a sophisticated network consisting of 18km of rising mains. Key engineering milestones include the construction of a 250m long marine outfall into Lough Swilly and a 150m crossing of the Leannan Estuary. The network is further supported by four new pumping stations designed with integrated septicity control to manage foul and storm flows effectively.

Environmental protection was a paramount concern due to the project’s proximity to Lough Swilly. Extensive environmental assessments were conducted, and construction schedules were strictly managed to adhere to allowable seasonal windows to protect local marine and bird life. These constraints required precise project management and coordination to ensure the 18km of rising main and outfall pipes were installed with minimal ecological impact.

Currently under construction, the scheme is a vital part of Uisce Éireann’s investment in Donegal’s infrastructure. Once fully operational, it will ensure legal compliance for wastewater treatment and provide the necessary capacity to enable future residential and commercial growth in the area.
